Static Season

Deon Calloway

"Lyrically dense, sonically adventurous — Calloway is operating at a different level."

Static Season is the kind of project that rewards repeated listens. Calloway layers references and internal rhyme schemes that reveal themselves slowly, and his beat selection is consistently surprising without being alienating. The production — handled entirely by Calloway himself — swings between lo-fi soul samples and crisp, modern drum programming with a confidence that most producers take years to develop. Lyrically, he's working through themes of ambition, doubt, and neighborhood loyalty without ever sounding like he's ticking boxes. The standout track 'Frequency' is a masterclass in tension and release. If there's a critique, it's that the album's second half loses some of the momentum built in the first six tracks. But that's a minor complaint about a project that otherwise hits hard from start to finish.
